Networking Hardware Explained
Firewalls, routers, switches, access points, SD-WAN, these terms get thrown around, and sometimes used interchangeably, but they each do something distinct. This is purely informational, as a managed client, we design and manage all of this for you (see Our Networking Standards), so there's nothing here you need to act on. It's just useful to know what's actually sitting in the rack.
Access Point
An access point extends your wired network out over Wi-Fi. It's the bridge between wireless devices (laptops, phones, tablets) and the actual wired network sitting behind it, essentially a wireless switch, forwarding traffic by MAC address the same way a wired switch does. One access point covers a limited area, which is why larger spaces (like a warehouse floor) need several, placed deliberately.
Switch
A switch connects devices within your local network, computers, printers, phones, cameras, so they can talk to each other over ethernet. More ports means more devices can be wired in. A switch doesn't touch the internet directly, it just handles traffic locally and hands anything destined for the outside world off to the router.
Router
A router's job is to move traffic between networks, most commonly, between your internal network and the internet. It looks at where data is trying to go and directs it there. Without a router, your office network and the internet simply can't talk to each other.
Firewall
A firewall is the gatekeeper. It sits at the edge of your network and decides what traffic is allowed in and out, inspecting it for threats along the way. A router gets traffic where it's going; a firewall decides whether that traffic should be allowed to go there at all.
SD-WAN Appliance
SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) is a step up in scope. Instead of managing traffic on one network, it manages traffic across multiple internet connections or multiple sites, intelligently routing traffic based on policy: sending voice calls over the most reliable connection, failing over to a backup line automatically if the primary drops, or balancing load across both. It's most relevant for multi-site businesses or anyone who can't tolerate a single point of failure.
Why the Lines Blur
Modern business hardware often combines several of these roles into one box. The equipment we install (see Our Networking Standards) is a router and firewall in a single device, with SD-WAN-style failover available on top of it. That's normal, and it's part of why the terms get used loosely in conversation, but understanding what each piece is actually responsible for makes it easier to follow along when we talk about your network.
