Our Networking Standards
A network we can't see is a network we can't protect. To manage your network properly, we hold every managed site to a few baseline standards. Here's what they are and why they matter. (New to networking terms? See Networking Hardware Explained.)
Business-Grade Firewall & Router, Required
Every managed network runs on a business-grade firewall/router that we install and configure, not the consumer-grade box your ISP hands you at signup. ISP-provided routers are built to get a household online, not to secure or report on a business network, they typically can't be monitored, can't alert on problems, and offer little real control over what's happening on your network.
Our standard equipment can do all three, which is the whole point.
What We Install
We standardize on Ubiquiti UniFi gateways, real business networking hardware with the monitoring, alerting, and remote management built in, at a cost that doesn't require an enterprise budget.
- Smaller offices: UniFi Cloud Gateway Max, a compact gateway with real firewall and intrusion prevention capability, sized right for a small office's traffic and device count.
- Larger operations: UniFi Dream Machine Pro Max, built for higher throughput and a much larger number of connected devices, with redundant storage for sites running network video recording.
Check the linked pages for current pricing. The right model for your site comes down to headcount, device count, and what else is running on the network, that gets scoped during onboarding, not guessed at.
Monitoring & Alerts
Once installed, your firewall reports back to us continuously. That means:
- Outages and connectivity drops trigger an alert on our end, often before anyone in your office has picked up the phone to tell us.
- Unusual activity on the network, the kind that might indicate a compromised device or an attempted intrusion, gets flagged for review.
- We can see the health of your network at a glance instead of guessing based on a support ticket that just says "the internet is down."
Managing Your ISP Connection
Your internet service provider is part of the equation we manage too, not something you're left to sort out on hold.
- If your connection drops, we're typically already aware and working the issue, sometimes before you notice.
- When an ISP outage does need a call, we're the ones making it. You shouldn't have to be on hold with your ISP explaining the same problem twice.
- For businesses that can't afford to go offline, we can also set up a secondary connection that kicks in automatically if the primary goes down.
What You Should Do
- Don't introduce personal routers, switches, or Wi-Fi extenders onto the network, they bypass the visibility and control the standard equipment provides, and they're a common source of otherwise unexplainable issues.
- If something feels slow or disconnected, submit a ticket. Even if we're already aware, confirming what you're seeing on your end helps us pin down the scope of the issue faster.
- Let us know before any office move, remodel, or new construction that touches where equipment is located or how the space is wired.
